Brian Herbert has authored many imaginative science fiction and fantasy novels. He is well known for his collaborations with author Kevin J. Anderson. He has written several prequels, including some sequels to his father’s landmark novel, Dune, which made it to the New York Best Seller List. Let us get to know more of Brian Herbert’s books in order.

1] Dreamer of Dune: The Biography of Frank Herbert

The novel, as the name suggests, is the biography of Frank Herbert penned by his son. It is an epic that combines religion, politics, human evolution, and ecology, which has successfully glued readers to it. It is considered to be one of the popular science fiction stories which have achieved a Hugo Award for Best Related Work finalist in the year 2004. It was made into a motion picture directed by David Lynch in 1984 and has recently been produced as a three-part mini-series on the Sci-Fi channel.

In the 2003 biography, Herbert pens down his father’s extraordinary life with a truthful intensity to bring to the surface man’s brilliant, and sometimes troubled, genius to full light.

Frank’s life was full of struggle before settling as a science fiction author. He was born in Tacoma, Washington, and got his education at the University of Washington, Seattle, and in the Navy. He tried his hands at being a radio commentator, TV cameraman, reporter, and editor of numerous West Coast newspapers. It also contains family photos that had never been published anywhere else, providing Brian’s perspective on his father as a creative and enigmatic personality.

2] The Forgotten Heroes: The Heroic Story of the United States Merchant Marine

This is another of Brian Herbert books in order in the non-fiction category. It was published in 2004 by Forge books. The United States Merchant marine has always been at the forefront of every American Military action serving with distinction in every case.

The amazing gallants of these extraordinary seamen have been chronicled in the novel, showcasing an array of data to describe the world of the Merchant Marine in times of peace and war.

The incidents have been drawn from government records, historical documents, diaries, and interviews with surviving veterans, which have been weaved into a brilliant story detailing the heroism, sacrifice, and heroism of the United States Merchant Marine.

The novel also reveals the great injustices of American history, allowing us to forget the great heroes of World War 2, the veterans of the Merchant Marines.

3] Prelude to Dune Series

The Prelude to Dune series is a trilogy set in the Dune universe, authored by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Publishers Weekly has called the series “a sprawling edifice Brian Herbert and Anderson have built on the foundation of the original Dune novels.” The series leads up to the events from the original novel Dune, which was published in 1965, and tells us the origins of some of its characters.

Dune: House Atreides

The first novel in the series, Dune: House Atreides, was published in 1999 and is set 35 years before the events of the original Dune (1965). It revolves around the heir-apparent to House Atreides Leto, the governor of Arrakis, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen, who is also the Imperial Crown Prince Shaddam.

Emperor Elrood’s son plots the killing of the king, while young Leto Atreides leaves to study Politics for a year at the court of Earl Dominic Vernius on Ix. A planetologist, Pardot Kynes, is after the secrets of Arrakis, and the young Duncan Idaho, a slave, is hunted by his cruel masters in a horrifying game from which he vows to escape and vengeance.

Dune: House Harkonnen

Dune: House Harkonnen is the second part of the series, published in the year 2000. It debuted at Number 11 on The New York Times Best Seller list but gradually rose to Number 8 in its second week of publication. It is set 18 years after when the first novel ended.

Shaddam IV has succeeded the Golden Lion throne of his father as Padishah Emperor. Baron Vladimir Harkonnen plots against Shaddam IV and House Atreides and also against the mysterious Sisterhood of the Bene Gesserit.

Leto Atreides is in a fix as he has to choose between friendship and duty, safety, and destiny. But he has to ultimately make a decision and choose to be strived for greatness or be crushed.

Dune: House Corrino

The third installment to the Prelude to Dune Series, Dune: House Corrino, was published in the year 2001. It is shown that after a year of the War of Assassins, Duke Leto Atreides sponsors an assault on Ix to reclaim the planet for Vernius while his mistress Jessica is pregnant with his child.

Shaddam IV is fearful of losing the Golden Lion Throne and has devised a radical plan as an alternative to the addictive spice, an effective ingredient in binding the Imperium together, and is found only in the desert world of Dune.

The novel is set in the Old Empire, where it is shown that humans have become reliant on machines to run their society. A group takes control of the Old Empire’s computer systems and uses the machine’s humanity, and becomes dependent on them to conquer the empire.

They named themselves “Titans,” who are humanity’s new rulers who had their brains removed and placed in robotic bodies to prolong their lives and rule, becoming cymes.
