Simon Scarrow Few Top Books/Series Summary

Let’s have a look at some top books by Simon Scarrow.

EAGLES OF EMPIRE SERIES

Eagles of the Empire is a series of historical military fiction novels. The series began in July 2000 with the publication of Under the Eagle, and as of January 2021, there have been 19 novels released in the series, with the 20th novel due in 2021.

The Eagles of the Empire series centers upon two main protagonists, Quintus Licinius Cato and Lucius Cornelius Macro, who are both Roman soldiers. Macro, a veteran with nearly 15 years’ service (at the start of the first novel) in the Roman Army, has recently been appointed to the Centurion. Cato is in his teen years, grew up in the Imperial Palace as a slave, and at the start of the series joins the Eagles as Macro’s Optio.

The first book starts in 42 AD. The books cover the experiences of the two soldiers, initially as an experienced centurion and new option, in battles in Germania and the invasion of Britain by Claudius as part of the Legio II Augusta. The 6th book The Eagle’s Prophecy has them serving as part of the Imperial Navy east of Italy. The 7th and 8th put them in Rome’s eastern provinces as agents of the emperor’s secretary Tiberius Claudius Narcissus.

The 9th sees them shipwrecked on the island of Crete, fighting against a full-scale uprising. The 11th is set in Rome with the leads hoping to save the emperor from the shady Liberators. The Blood Crows is set once again in Britannia. The two protagonists are faced with defeating tribal rebels.

REVOLUTION EMPIRE SERIES

The Revolution Quartet centers upon the lives of Napoleon Bonaparte and Arthur Wellesley, later the Duke of Wellington. The first book in the quartet starts in 1769 and follows the two young men through their youth and on to their military careers.

BLACKOUT

The stunning second world war thriller from the celebrated Sunday Times. Berlin in December 1939 is beginning to feel the effects of war. Shortages are becoming noticeable in the city’s most celebrated restaurants, much to the irritation of powerful men, but, far more menacingly, the newly-imposed nightly blackout has brought monsters out to play.

When Gerda Korzeny, a former actress and celebrated beauty, is raped and murdered, the establishment takes note. Gerda was married to a top Nazi lawyer, a friend of Goebbels. The Gestapo call in Criminal Inspector Horst Schenke to investigate.

There’s a reason Schenke has been selected – he’s not a member of the Nazi Party and is only tolerated for his glamorous past racing cars, an illustrious career that ended in a crash. If this case should uncover demons, then Schenke will make the perfect scapegoat. Then, as the nights draw even darker, another woman is murdered and the pressure on Schenke mounts.

PLAYING WITH DEATH

FBI Special Agent Rose Blake has more than an increasingly distant husband and an Asperger’s teenage son to cope with. She is still recovering seven months on from an investigation that went horrifically wrong.

The memories of Shane Koenig’s escape from his isolated cabin, and the trail of deaths he left behind haunt her waking hours, but Rose must move forwards. And when the call comes in about a suspicious death from arson, she abandons her family dinner and is on the scene within minutes.

The victim, a loner, is dead in his chair in front of his computer, burned in what looks like a wetsuit. There is no sign of forced entry or accelerant. It looks like suicide, but the cards don’t stack up. And the further Rose investigates, the more she realizes this could be a twisted video game. Worse still, her nemesis, Koenig looks to be back on the murder trial, with her son a future victim.

  2. Stuart E Ross

I recently discovered Simon Scarrow, read “Young Bloods” and consequently read the four books I thoroughly enjoyed. I am now embarking on the “Eagle series”
Having started at the wrong end and read “The Legion” which I couldn’t put down. I am a Bernard Cornwall reader and have read all of his work to date, and I find Simon Scarrow of very similar and easy to read and understand.

    Kind Regards Stuart Ross
